Kate McDonnell, graphiste
Born in Montreal, I spent several years as a typesetter for weekly newspapers, an apprenticeship that taught me typography, page design, advertising design and printing preparation. Eventually I moved to type shops where demanding work was being done for agencies.
Typesetting vanished as a separate trade as the Macintosh arrived. I learned all the major design packages: Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark Xpress, InDesign, and worked in page layout, photo retouching, illustration and logo design.
I still love fonts and typography and can do more elegant and precise work in that area than most people.
I have also done web design and other general screen-based work.

Née à Montréal, j’ai travaillé comme typographe pour quelques années dans les hebdos, apprenant la typographie, la mise en page, le design des pubs et le pré-presse. J’ai éventuellement gravité vers des boîtes de typographie où l’on faisait du travail pour des agences très exigeantes.
Avec l’arrivée du Macintosh, le métier de typographe disparassait. J’ai maîtrisé Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark Xpress et éventuellement InDesign, travaillant dans la mise en page, la retouche des photos, l’illustration et le design des logos.
J'ai toujours gardé mon affection pour la typographie et les caractères : je peux faire du travail typographique plus exact et plus beau que l’ordinaire.
En addition, j’ai fait des sites web et des autres graphiques pour l’écran.
